Given the recent posts from out resident train enthusiast, Stuart Allen.... Im just wondering if he might possibly be able to help with a matter Ive been trying to get to the bottom of for a good, few decades now!? In short..... When I was 11, we were taken on a school holiday to Brytisilio, near Llangollen in Wales. It was a week consisting of numerous, outdoor activities, such as walking, canoeing, climbing and whatnot.... Anyhow, this one day, we were told we were being taken to a disused railway tunnel that was supposed to be haunted. (I believe it was one of the longest tunnels in the region, or so we were told?) The ghost story associated with the place was that a local bloke used to regularly make his way home through the tunnel after a night out at the pub, as he was very familiar with the timetable, etc. One night, however, he was staggering home through the darkness and, unbeknown to him, a special had been laid on (or some such) and he was hit mid-tunnel, knocking him out of his hobnail boots with the force of the impact...... Ever since then, his apparition had allegedly been seen staggering through the darkness..... Of course, I couldnt say whether there was a shred of truth to this tale, but, just thinking back to the site itself, it would make a rare old site to stake-out if it were actually true!! Just prior to our setting out for the place, a couple of the male teachers decided that the trip was going to be too harrowing for them..... and said they were off to the local pub instead! We got to the tunnel (cant even begin to think how far the drive there actually was from base?) and entered, helped by some huge, powerful, searchlight-like torches carried by the teachers..... Needless to say, the sense of trepidation was HIGH!!! Not far into the tunnel, one of the girls kicked something and, bending down, straightened up with a huge, old, hobnail boot held out in front of her!!! She lets out a rip-roaring scream...... along with at least 95% of those present...... including myself, of course!?! Rolls eyes!! Bonus from this encounter was that someone grabbed onto my hand and held on to me for dear life and Ive been sort of hoping it was one of the prettier girls present for over 35 yrs now!! (Stone cold PLAYA!!! Even at 11..... Chaaaaa....!!!) Anyway... not too long afterwards, someone else lets out a piercing scream and there - some distance in front of us - was a flitting, white figure moving slowly from right to left across the tunnel....... I can still see it in my minds-eye even now and cannot quite put it into words adequately..... It had a flickering quality to it - like a VERY old black and white movie - and appeared to be rather Egyptian in appearance to me, though I cant quite say why, exactly!? While the bulk of us were transfixed with terror by the spectacle - more screaming, of course - a small handful of lads from the panicking throng actually RAN AT the form and JUMPED ON IT!!!!! Needless to say, after a quick scuffle, the ghost was soon unmasked (or should I say un-sheeted!?) and it turns out that it was one of the two teachers who had supposedly sloped off to the pub!! The other one was secreted in one of those archway depressions that you find dotted along tunnel walls... and was flashing his torch onto the form of his companion with a white bed-sheet draped over him!! Rolls eyes!! Anyway - cutting a long story short, Ive often wondered - over the subsequent years - about the tunnel concerned..... Was it genuinely haunted, perhaps and.... for that matter..... whereabouts was it situated?
