Given the uselessness of council process so far (by which I mean elected members) being most reluctant to cut any spending at all (at the annual plan meeting even the mayor wanted more money spent on stuff so the best they could come up with was a few hundred thousand saved on Christmas decorations. Then this process will ignore the most obvious options like selling RedBus which is not strategic but the problem is some councillors are dead set against selling anything or cutting any spending and even have voted that community grants funding be restored to the level it was 10 years ago! And apparently the only option left is to borrow to the hilt and saddle ratepayers with even more debt servicing costs. Now Dunedin City Council bit the bullet and sold off a number of non core assets such as their bus company. As far as I can see the people of Christchurch would be better served by the council being sacked and replaced with commissioners.
