Giving Thanks for Rivers. Rivers are the threads that run through our lives. Everywhere CAI works – from the banks of Pakistan’s mighty Indus, to the Panj (Oxus) between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, to Montana’s wild Yellowstone – we hear the rushing water of a wild river. These rivers mold our landscapes. They link us and divide us. They sustain us and reflect us, inspire and renew us. “Rivers are the primal highways of life,” Tom Robbins wrote. “From the crack of time, they had borne men’s dreams, and in their lovely rush to elsewhere, fed our wanderlust, mimicked our arteries, and charmed our imaginations in a way the static pond or vast and savage ocean never could.” Today we give thanks for the wild, winding rivers that surround us. “Eventually all things merge into one, and a river runs through it,” Montana author Norman Maclean wrote.
