Giving a fee estimate to someone on the phone is a challenge. - TopicsExpress

Giving a fee estimate to someone on the phone is a challenge. People dont know what they have and therefore, give a useless parameter of data from which I am to glean a tax preparation estimate. Case in point: I only have one W2 but it has two states. True...he only has one W2 with two states...BUT....after I saw his W2, i can see that he is on an nonaccountable plan with a company car; after asking some questions, I find out he works solely from a home office and has unreimbursed employee expenses as well as scads of business mileage. So - what he thought he had was vastly different from what a trained professional can glean from that one W2. Box 14 = AUTO. It changes everything. Yes, he will have to pay me more...but instead of a balance due, he will get a refund. Estimates just dont work. Either be willing to pay a professional to do it right or...invest in TurboTax and take your chances.
