Giving birth can mean risking your life in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria State, which has one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates. Pregnant women are accustomed to going to traditional birth attendants (TBAs) in their community when it’s time to deliver; often a hospital is too far away, and cultural norms are very powerful.
