Gizmo of the Week: Natural Selection Gizmo We’ve all heard the story about the impact of the industrial revolution on the peppered moth population. As pollution blackened tree trunks, the dark form of the peppered moth flourished, while the lighter form dwindled. Using the Natural Selection Gizmo, student can explore how color can have an impact on survival. As an extension to the lesson, have students read about the recent research that suggests natural selection is having an effect on insect populations again, but this time due to climate change. j.mp/1pzxwvc Scientists looked at changes in insect distributions over an 18-year period in Europe. On average, insects became lighter in color as darker populations shifted to the north. Can you hypothesize why the lighter colored insects are more likely to be found in hotter climates?
