Gizmo of the Week: No Alien Left Behind It’s field trip day - TopicsExpress

Gizmo of the Week: No Alien Left Behind It’s field trip day at Alien Elementary School, and the aliens are outside waiting for the buses to take them to the zoo. The buses can only leave when filled with passengers. How many buses will be needed, and how many aliens will be left over? The No Alien Left Behind Gizmo uses this scenario to introduce division with remainders. For example, if there are 21 aliens and each bus holds 7 aliens, then three buses will be needed. Students model this by lining up 21 aliens on the sidewalk and dragging three 7-passenger buses in front of the aliens. This models the division problem 21 ÷ 7 = 3. If the bus capacity changes to 8, we have 21 ÷ 8 = 2 with remainder 5, or 2 R5. Maybe the remaining aliens will have to ride to the zoo in their parents SUVs!
