Glad to see that AMPAS did a better job than the DGA in its directorial nominations...more often, its the other way around. AMERICAN SNIPER was a decent job of directing, but not up to the standards of similar movies like THE HURT LOCKER and BLACK HAWK DOWN. Eastwood got the Guild nomination over several more deserving directors...I didnt care for FOXCATCHER--which got that directing slot for the Oscars--all that much, but I think Bennett Miller certainly nailed its tone and got the best performance Ive seen to-date out of Channing Tatum. I didnt think SELMA was anything extraordinary strictly from a directing standpoint (if David Oyelowo doesnt manage the flawless performance he gave as MLK, the movie risks descending to the level of the insufferable THE BUTLER), but even though I wasnt expecting Ava DuVernay to be nominated, I thought David Fincher (GONE GIRL), J.C. Chandor (A MOST VIOLENT YEAR) or even Damien Chazelle (WHIPLASH) might get the fifth nomination ahead of Miller or Eastwood.
