Gladno Polje Shelter, Sarajevo - September 2014 Video 2 One of the public shelters in Sarajevo, housing about 200 dogs, who live in appalling conditions due to lack of funding from the Municipality and Agricultural co-operative who started the shelter. The dogs are fed and looked after by unpaid volunteers. On our visit in September, there was no running water and the volunteers had to do what they could with water brought in by hand. The smell of fear and excrement in the pens in the building was overwhelming. Sanela writes: The shelter for abandoned and lost dogs in Gladno Polje near Sarajevo, Bosnia has been in existence for three years now. This is a state shelter and a project of a federal firm ZZ UPI ILIDZA. At first, they had an agreement with one of Sarajevos municipalities (Ilidza) and as of lately, they signed an agreement with yet another municipality (Sarajevo Center) which also gives some money for the dogs who end up at the shelter Gladno Polje. I am not sure how much money they give to the shelter. I do however know that all the dogs at the shelter get is chicken by-product from a poultry factory (which is free) and food leftovers from nearby restaurants. This is not nearly enough to feed the dogs, who go hungry on a daily basis. The only thing the shelter pays for is water, since there hasnt been any electricity in the building for over a year, because of the damage to the roof of the building, which is leaking every time it rains. The capacity of the building has been exceeded a long time ago. There are between 150 - 200 dogs there at a time and new dogs are constantly being brought in. The condition in which the dogs live is horrible. Many dog boxes are either damaged or completely collapsed. Hygiene is also very bad. There is no quarantine, so dogs brought in from the street are right away mixed with the dogs who are already at the shelter. The yard of the shelter is not properly fenced, so hungry dogs are constantly getting into fights with one another . The only medical treatment injured and sick dogs receive is from a small group of us volunteers, which is about 3 people. Many people helped us with their donations to feed the dogs, but we are running out of food to feed these dogs. We are also in constant need of vaccines, flee protection and deworming pills for the dogs, as well as donations to cover vet bills. We also feed about 50 abandoned and street dogs in the municipality of Gladno Polje, who are outside of the shelter. Most of all, we need food, since the dogs are going hungry on a daily basis. We do not have enough food to fill every belly on a daily basis. It is heartbreaking when you have to chose who to feed and who will go hungry. We would also love to collect enough money to fix some of the dog boxes before the winter comes. The shelter is leaking and the puppies will not survive the winter under these conditions. It is horrible to witness the shelter in bad weather, seeing all the wet, cold and scared dogs and not being able to help them
