Glass Houses. Last night I watched Clear and Present Danger with my friends, and the character Jack Ryan is telling someone he is at fault for an event that led to the death of several American soldiers... Their teenaged daughter (mid-movie): Why is he saying Its my fault when the other guy did it? Me (rubbing my hands together): Oh, heres a Jesus teaching moment... Her (glaring at me): ...I already went to church today. Me (dejected): Fine. Its because even if hes not directly responsible for what happened, it happened under his watch. Hes accountable for it, and hes facing the consequences. This morning I came across one of my pet peeves about working in corporate: not taking care of your own (physical) messes. This coffee spill was in the stairwell -- do you mean youre so busy that you cant clean up something that could kill someone? Im back in an environment where people drop food, spill coffee, toss napkins, and litter wherever, and Im guessing its either because 1) they didnt notice the drop, 2) they figured someone else would clean up for them, or 3) the figured they were just too busy. Of course its unintentional, but an accident or good intentions doesnt release people of responsibility. And as I ranted and raved to myself about this lack of accountability, I thought, How many people did you NOT talk to last night because you were too busy setting up and cleaning up? Yes, it all needed to get done, but dont blame it on your introversion. After years in ministry, I still havent learned this simple axiom that applies to all of life: its not about the planning, preparing, or running an event -- its about caring for the people involved. Including the coffee spillers.
