Glenn Lall, wife plead not guilty to tax evasion Glen Lall and his wife Bhena walked out of the court room to be greeted by his staff, supporters and friends. The publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall and his wife Bhena Lall, who operates Bhena’s Footwear, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Georgetown Magistrate Court to answer charges of fraud and aiding and abetting to commit fraud. It was the Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority Khurshid Sattaur who filed the charges. It reportedly stemmed from the importation of two Lexus vehicles by the Brijnanans who are friends of the Lalls. The Kaieteur News publisher contends that the charges are an attempt to muzzle his newspaper from exposing corruption. Most recently he revealed email communication between Sattaur and the Attorney General as showing a plot to shut down his newspaper. The GRA contends that the Lalls, knowingly dealt with goods with intent to defraud the state and evaded taxes that was payable to customs. Sattaur said the taxes evaded are close to $100million dollars. The two duty free vehicles were bought by the Brijnanan re-migrant couple. As re-migrants they would have benefitted from duty free concessions. Glen and Bhena pleaded not guilty to the charges and they were released on their own recognizance after lawyers for the GRA did not object to bail. The couple will return to court on November 24th. The matter was transferred to court three. Khemraj Ramjattan one of the lawyers representing the Lall’s spoke to members of the media. Outside of the court room Lall supporters greeted him with loud cheers.
