Global Learning XPrize : Empowering young minds everywhere! Today, it is my great pleasure to be a part of the launch of the Global Learning XPRIZE! This is a $15 million competition to create Open Source software that will teach a child to read, write, and perform basic numeracy within 18 months without the aid of a teacher. This is not designed to replace teachers, but to provide an educational solution where little or none exists. At present, it is estimated that over 800 million people of all ages lack the basic skills of reading, writing, and numeracy. According to UNESCO figures, 250 million kids in the world today lack those basic literacy skills. As you can imagine, this XPRIZE could have a profound impact on these kids and bringing nations out of poverty. We are hoping to create up to 1000 teams from around the globe to build open source software and systems to empower these new minds to achieve the most fundamental kind of learning, and help to start their lives off with the best possible advantage--- knowledge! We will test this software with 5000 kids in underdeveloped locations on the planet.
