Global markets are continuing from yesterday’s gains, keeping one eye on some good earnings results and the other on geo political tensions. Daimler reported solid Q2 earnings, Australia reported higher Q2 inflation numbers, while BOE in their minutes, emphasized maintaining low interest rates to keep helping the economy. In Asia, LG posted softer Q2 earnings, China continues to battle a widening food scandal and another airline tragedy in Taiwan. Europe is in the green while overnight in Asia, Shanghai and Hang Seng posted decent gains. Nikkei was slightly down. In The U.S, markets are generally positive on earnings momentum as heavy hitters from Apple to Chipotle Mexican Grill post better than expected results. Investors are seeing good value for most companies at current valuations but some like Boeing which reported higher profits, are being sold after a large run up on the stock. Today, notables Dow Chemicals, Pepsi and General Dynamics also reported strong Q2 earnings results. In Canada, we have a triple hitter helping the TSX this morning. First; global earnings have been positive overall, boosting the global growth outlook, secondly; retail sales data for May came in higher, up a record .70% to $41.98bln on strong auto sales, and third; we have some M&A activity announced with BCE buying the remaining stake in regional Bell Aliant for $3.95bln , the goal being to take the company private. The S&P500 is up 4 to 1,988 the DOW is down 13 to 17,100 and the TSX is up 69 to 15,384 as Energy and Telecom lead gainers. The Loonie is down 3bps to US$0.9310. Bond yields are down with the CDA 5-year at 1.46% and the 10-year is at 2.11%. Gold is flat at US$1,308/oz.
