GlobalPort to become more energetic with new recruits solarsportsdesk.ph/bk/bknews/2013/07/13/globalport-to-become-more-energetic-with-new-recruits#.UeRUjSgnGc4.twitter When the PBA Governors’ Cup kicks off on August 14, Global Port Batang Pier will be a more energetic team. In an interview with Solar Sports Desk, Batang Pier head coach Junel Baculi said he is trying to fine tune a new offensive facet, relying on the strengths of star players Gary David, Willie Miller and Solomon Mercado. “Gusto naming maging mas may energy ngayon. Dati kasi hindi kami ganun eh. Kaya iyan ang thrust namin ngayon sa practice,” said the fiery mentor. The same philosophy, according to Baculi, is the reason why they decided to tab former US NCAA guard Markeith Cummings as import for the season-ending tourney. “Bata itong si Cummings, he can play inside and he can also be a threat outside,” said Baculi of his import who is arriving in the country on Monday. Cummings is a fresh graduate out of Kennesaw State, where he tallied 16.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game in his last season with the Owls. NBA scouts say that Cummings is an efficient scorer who is willing to bang bodies underneath with his wide 240-lb frame. The 6-5 cager is also a known defender, who may need some improvements in the rebounding department. And to further inject energy to his team, Baculi recently signed free agent Marvin Hayes to a once conference contract. Hayes was known during his time at the PBA D-League as the perennial Calvin Abueva defender, something that Baculi hopes will boost their newly revitalized line-up. “Nakita namin sa practice, okay naman yung pinapakita nung bata. May energy,” said the National University athletic director. Meanwhile, Baculi is happy to reveal that new recruits Jay Washington and Yousef Taha have both been adapting well to their system. “Maganda yung nakikita namin sa kanila. Slowly they’re getting the groove of our play,” said Baculi. Global Port bared that they will give Gilas-Pilipinas guard Gary David a few days of rest after his stint with at the FIBA-Asia championship. “Maikli lang yung conference, so bibigyan lang naming siguro siya ng ilang araw na pahinga. Kailagan naming siya,” said Baculi. David will play key role in the team’s offense alongside Mercado, who decided to forego his shoulder operation to help the team improve from their worst finish the last two conferences.
