Globals update on the current Seattle/Tacoma port situation: We - TopicsExpress

Globals update on the current Seattle/Tacoma port situation: We are still experiencing delays at the ports of Tacoma and Seattle. The Port of Tacoma posted this on Monday: “Productivity has picked up a bit and terminal operators have added an extra gang to each ship. It will still take time to catch up on the backlog.” Contrary to Port of Tacoma’s post, we believe that many terminals still continue to have low or no labor, given the that the pace of import container availability is still quite slow and some vessels that have berthed a couple days ago still do not have any containers made available. Additionally, there are several vessels (such as the OOCL London and Grandville Bridge) anchored in the Puget Sound waiting for other vessels to depart before they can berth. Anchored container vessels are very rare, thus this is another signal that the terminals are behind normal production levels. The closure of most terminals yesterday for Veteran’s Day is another factor contributing to the backlog. Seattle/Tacoma region also experienced severe winds on Tuesday night, and strong winds are expected to continue throughout the day. For safety reasons, terminals in the area are working to ensure containers are secure, which is adding to the slower than normal operations. Global drivers have been operating as of 4:00 am to get into the terminal lines, with wait times in line averaging 6 hours. However, on a positive note, many terminals have begun to accept export containers again, which is an encouraging sign.
