Gloomy Sunday Quite a fitting day for the this post dont you think? I was tempted to post this yesterday just to aggravate the old OCD, but decided against it. Anyway, moving on, Gloomy Sunday, also known as the Hungarian Suicide Song, is a song composed by Hungarian pianist and composer Rezső Seress and published in 1933. The song has been the focus of an urban legend that purports that a large number of suicides have been linked to this song. Some claim that people died after hearing it, some were apparently found with the sheet music in their hands after their death...The reason for these suicides is because of the sombre tones within the song combined with depressing lyrics. The was covered by Billie Holiday, however this version was banned by the BBC during WW2 as it was seen to lower peoples morale. The ban was only lifted as recently as 2002. The link is to the original piece in Hungarian. Somewhat ironically the original composer of the song, Mr Seress, did in fact commit suicide in the end. Having survived a jump from a building he then strangled himself with wire...its a strange old world isnt it? Note: Athena previously created a post about this, however for some reason I didnt realise this and wrote another post on the topic...I chose to leave it to post anyway as this one has different information and also has the link to the original song. You can then see Athenas post for the English lyrics. Symbiosis at its finest. - Malum https://youtube/watch?v=55FP1LfkkVQ
