Glory to God: the Presbyterian Hymnal Hymn 5: God, the Sculptor of the Mountains was written in the 1990s by John Thornburg (t) and Amanda Husberg (m). Unlike the first four hymns in the Triune God section, this has no Father/Son/Holy Ghost formula. Instead there are wonderful metaphors for God including sculptor of mountains, miller of sand, jeweler of heavens, potter of land, womb of creation, nuisance of Pharoah, cleaver of sea, pillar in darkness, beacon of the free, fount of deliverance, dresser of the vineyard, planter of wheat, reaper of the harvest, source of all we eat, host at every table, unexpected infant, calm, determined youth, table-turning prophet, and resurrected truth. The hymn also includes four of humanitys petitions: we are formless; shape us now, we are aimless; lead us now, we are hungry; feed us now, and we are searching; meet us now. This is the facing-page hymn to Holy God we Praise Your Name with its more traditional language.
