Gloss by Mihai Eminescu translated by Miqhael-M. Khesapeake A time passing, a time coming too, All are old and all are new; What is wrong and what is good Ask yourself and do value; Don’t feel hope and don’t feel scarin’, What’s a wave like waves is passing; Either urgin’ you, or callin’, You just keep yourself aloofing. So many passing by are there afore, We hear a lot in our ear, Who could ever recall them all for sure And would stay to listen them?.. You, just stay aside like this, And find yourself again now, When with desert noises A time passing, a time coming too. Neither even bend that tongue of yours, The cold balance of the thinking, Toward that trice changing us For the mask of happy-feeling, Which out of its death is born And for just a trice lasts maybe; Whoever knows its charm All are old and all are new. A watcher like at the theater In the world you must yourself imagine: One could change four times his character, However is, you can guess his face, Either he weeping, or quarreling, You’re there, living in the nook, And understand out of their playing What is wrong and what is good. The future and the past-passing Are two of the sheet facets, Sees at the end of it the itself beginning The one who knows how to learn these; All that past and up to be In the present we have them, true, But about their own futility Ask yourself and do value. For to the same means Are subdued all that there are, And for thousands of years Glad and sad the people are; Some other masks, the same play, Some other mouths, the same gamut sayin’, Deceived so often are they Don’t feel hope and don’t feel scarin’. Don’t feel hope seeing the rascals There at the triumph making their bridge, Shall surpass you, the numskulls, Either being you with a lucky-star in your brow; Don’t feel scared, they shall search again, All gathered together, to bow, pretendin’, Don’t become their companion: What’s a wave like waves is passing. With a song of mermaid, The people cast some shining traps; As to change the actors on that stage laid, Luring you into the whirlings; You, go aside avoiding them, Neither even pay any attention willin’, On your own path by them, Either urgin’ you, or callin’. If they touch you, dodge yourself, If deriding you, keep your mouth shut; What would you will, with those advices of yourself, When you know their value of thought? Let them all say whatever wish, Let them get their fame or striving; So you couldn’t love there whatever airish, You just keep yourself aloofing. You just keep yourself aloofing, Either urgin’ you, or callin’; What’s a wave like waves is passing, Don’t feel hope and don’t feel scarin’. Ask yourself and do value What is wrong and what is good; All are old and all are new: A time passing, a time coming too.
