Glossary of Some Research Related Terminology Analysis of variance (ANOVA): a statistical procedure that tests whether group means differ. Bivariate correlation: a correlation between two variables. Chi-square test: a non-parametric test of statistical significance appropriate when the data are in the form of frequency counts; it compares frequencies actually observed in a study with expected frequencies to see whether they are significantly different. Coefficient of determination: the proportion of variance in one variable explained by a second variable. Contingency table: a table representing cross-tabulation of two or more categorical variables. Dependent variable: another term for outcome variable. Heteroscedasticity: this occurs when at each point on the predictor variable, the spread of residuals, is different. In other words the residuals at each level of the predictor variable have unequal variances. Histogram: frequency distribution. Homoscedasticity: an assumption in regression analysis that the residuals at each point of the predictor variable have equal variances. Hypothesis: a prediction of what the results of the study would be.
