Gnosis is becoming aware of our divinity, but not by rejecting our humanity. It is true that the Gnostic masters portray human incarnation in a negative light as a form of imprisonment from which we need to escape, but that is only half the story. They also portray it in a positive light as an opportunity to spiritually awaken that we should embrace. If we understand the paradox at the heart of the Gnosis we can see that these apparently contradictory teachings are actually complementary, because both are true. To know the One we must escape from identification with the separate self, yet this process of spiritual awakening can only happen to o an individual. Gnosis is not retreating from life, it is valuing human incarnation as a precious opportunity to commune with the Oneness through the multiplicity, to discover the Good through the good and bad, to find Love through separation. Gnosis is not being the One instead of a separate individual, but as well. It is living as God and man, after the mythical example of Jesus. Far from rejecting the world as a worthless illusion, Gnosis is participating fully in the process of redeeming the kenoma by transforming it into the perfect image of the pleromic archetypes,, for, as the Christian Gnostic Marsanes teaches,: ‘In every respect the sense-perceptible cosmos is worthy of being saved in its entirety.’ Gnosis is playing a part in creating Heaven on Earth by collectively dreaming a perfect dream of unity and love, instead of the present nightmare of division and strife.
