Go Scott Ludlam! From: Ludlam, Scott (Senator) Sent: Thursday, 22 May 2014 7:10 PM To: Pyne, Chris (MP) Cc: SEN-Senators; SEN-Ministers; REPS-Members Subject: RE: Vinnies CEO Sleepout Dear Minister Pyne Thankyou for your email inviting me to the CEO sleepout. I attended the event in Canberra last winter and found it an extremely worthwhile – and chilling – experience. Given the extraordinary assault on low-income Australians in last week’s budget which will unquestionably push many thousands of people into homelessness, I wonder whether you see any irony in sending this invitation out to fellow MPs? Did it fleetingly cross your mind before you hit send that cutting $40 million from the capital budget of homeless service providers might be strangely at odds with inviting everyone to join you in a night outdoors? Given your evident concern for the homeless, in addition to spending a night wrapped in an expensive sleeping bag followed by a hot shower and return to your Ministerial duties, I urgently invite you to consider: - Reversing the $44m your government cut for homelessness shelters and housing your government cut under the NPAH in March - Supporting the Senate motion of May 15 2014 on behalf of the Australian Greens, ALP and Senators Madigan and Xenophon, demanding your government provide an estimate of the number of additional Australians who will be forced into homelessness as a result of measures taken in your 2014/15 budget, and identify measures your Government proposes to take to provide adequate emergency accommodation and services, and adequate and affordable housing for people made homeless by measures in the Government‘s budget in addition to those 100 000 already experiencing homelessness in Australia. (Motion at scott-ludlam.greensmps.org.au/content/motions/budget-cuts-will-force-more-homelessness - Giving us a call to talk about the Greens costed homelessness initiative to double existing homelessness services and provide a home for all rough sleepers by 2020 (The Greens’ Homelessness Action Plan at scott-ludlam.greensmps.org.au/homeless ) - Setting a target to end homelessness and urgently provide certainty to homeless people and the service sector by committing to a long term strategy with continuity of funding - Reintroducing a Minister for Housing and homelessness - Reversing the $500m cuts in the budget for housing including axing 12,000 new affordable rentals under the National Rental Affordability Scheme - Spending some time with people actually experiencing homelessness as well as CEOs who have the luxury of going home the next day Thankyou again for your invitation to this year’s sleepout. As Minister for Education, I care deeply about ensuring our children get the best possible start in life. The Vinnies CEO Sleepout is a wonderful campaign that raises awareness on this very issue. This is just a small part of the work that the St Vincent de Paul Society does to support the most needy in our community. The $19 million this event has raised since 2006 has helped provide invaluable support to homeless people right around Australia. I am very proud to be taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout this year, and I encourage you to dig deep to support this important cause. On 19 June I will be joining many other Australians representing the Prime Minister by sleeping out with the aim of not only raising much-needed funds, but to also raise awareness. Please visit my profile at the Vinnies CEO Sleepout website and donate today. Thank you for your support in this very worthwhile cause. Yours sincerely Christopher Pyne MP
