Go and do the same? (Luke 10:37) RICHARD BARCELLOS “Go and do the same” (Luke 10:37, NASB). Q: What does “do” mean in context and what is the result of doing in context? My answer is “do” refers to that which is to be done “to inherit eternal life” (10:25) as the law teaches (10:26-28) and as affirmed by Jesus (cf. 10:28 and elsewhere [Paul and Moses affirm the same.]) and the result of such doing is eternal life. But, someone might reply, ““Do” refers to showing mercy.” OK, but showing mercy “to inherit eternal life” based on the “do this and live” principle of 10:28 (cf. Lev. 18:5). Jesus understood Lev. 18:5 as Paul did, as a works-unto-eternal life principle impossible for us to fulfill (cf. Rom. 10:5ff. and Gal. 3:11-12). Does that mean I would not preach to my people that they ought to love their neighbor? No. It does mean I would not do so from this passage. The lawyer needed justification before sanctification. He had things turned upside down. PS: Before anyone calls me an Antinomian, recall that I wrote a book supporting the third use of the law which is out of print but a second edition is on its way. :-) amazon/In-Defense-Decalogue-Critique-Covenant/dp/0965495590/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1391246933&sr=8-5&keywords=richard+barcellos
