Goa - Beyond the Beaches Goa is home for me. Whenever I tell this to anyone, most people tell me how lucky I am and then they wax eloquent on about what a wonderful time they had on Goas beaches and those quaint coastal villages. But there is SO much more to Goa than its beaches. This time, I was determined to show my kids the other Goa. The Goa that falls outside the tattered pages of a guidebook. The Goa that lives in its villages, in its paddy fields, in its village fairs, forests and farms. It is this Goa that is my home as much as the Goa they show in slick tourism brochures. We have been exploring this Goa over the past one week, and what a week it has been! We have explored a village on top of the ghat, trekked to a waterfall seldom visited by outsiders, broken bread with village elders, tried deep sea fishing, visited a village Zatra, eaten traditional sweets, marveled over the iridescent wings of a butterfly at a butterfly garden, sat on a log in a clear stream in the forest with tiny silvery fish nibbling at our toes, watched the sun set over an ancient temple of black stone located deep in the forest! As my kids say, Mamma, there is so much more to do in Goa than just visit beaches!
