Goals from Rasheedat Ajibade, Uchenna Kanu and Aminat Yakubu saw Nigeria beat Mexico 3-0 to win Group D at the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Costa Rica. Ajibade scrambled home after 12 minutes, but the Flamingoes other two goals were the products of near perfect team play. Mexico came close to reducing the arrears, with Jacqueline Rodriguez clipping the post with Onyinye Okeke stranded. The Flamingoes were to extend their advantage. From a throw in, Yakubu whipped in a superb cross, and the effervescent Kanu dipped ahead of her marker to nod home. The two-goal advantage was matched by the possession and the pressing, and it was not to be long before it was three. Kanu was the provider this time, showing some nifty footwork before lofting a ball into the path of Yakubu, who equally stooped to head home. Mary Ologbosere grazed the crossbar from a free-kick and Ajibade saw what should have been a tap-on tickle across the face of goal. Rodriguez hit the crossbar with a header, but Nigeria were not to be troubled. Or toppled and they won the game, and the group with some comfort.
