God, El Shaddai, is all-sufficient. He is the Great I AM, the only self-sufficient One. Any attempt to live independently of Him is a claim to self-sufficiency, which God alone possesses. It is therefore an act of idolatry. Self must be dethroned. We cannot elevate self and worship God at the same time! Worship, by definition, means to bow down, to make oneself lowly before another in an act of submission and servitude. It is an act of humility. We cannot serve both God and self. It is only when we humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord that He will lift us up. It is only when we acknowledge our absolute dependence and reliance on Him that His all-sufficiency meets and satisfies our utter need and every inadequacy. It is there that we learn what grace really is, that in our weakness His strength is perfected.
