God Is Waiting for Your Call The book of Psalms contains 150 prayers—some long, some short, some joyful, some sorrowful. Many of the psalms were written by David, Israels greatest king, who is described in the Bible as a man after Gods own heart (see Acts 13:22). In Psalm 145, David wrote, The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them (vv. 18-19). The Lord is indeed near, waiting for us to initiate contact with him. And when we do begin conversing with him, he hears—that is, he listens carefully and attentively. This theme was echoed by Isaiah, who spoke for the Lord, saying, Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will hear (Isa. 65:24). God knows what we need even before we come to him (see Matt. 6:8). THE KING IS PRESENT WITH US—READY AND WILLING TO CONVERSE WITH US. From these Scriptures and many others, we know that the King is present with us—ready and willing to converse with us. But it is amazing how many distractions there are to take our focus off of him. When we turn on the evening news, our attention becomes fixated on the latest crisis. When we watch our favorite sports team, we become absorbed in the competition in which it is engaged. When our children start throwing food at the dinner table or squabbling about something, naturally we feel that we must intervene. Its certainly not that God is going to vanish when our attention gets diverted; its just that our thoughts and feelings shift elsewhere. Still, we have this assurance: He is near, and he is eagerly waiting for us to re-engage with him in prayer. Our challenge is to continually come back to God with hearts and minds focused on him —Falling in Love with Prayer
