God Is With Us They will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us. (Matthew 1:23 NIV) In Old Testament times, the prophet Isaiah gave a stern warning to any nation that planned to come against God’s people. He told them that no matter what plan they devised, it would be thwarted. They could never succeed. Raise the war cry, you nations, and be shattered! Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare for battle and be shattered! … Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted; propose your plan, but it will not stand, for God is with us. (Isaiah 8:9-10 NIV) Isaiahs last words here, God is with us, are important to note this Christmas day. The Hebrew word for God is with us is Immanuel. Jump ahead some 700 years to Matthews Gospel where we again find the word Immanuel, God is with us... An angel of the Lord appeared to him [Joseph] in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”, which means “God with us”. (Matthew 1:20-23 NIV) The birth of Jesus ushered in a 30 year span when God himself lived on earth in human form. He was indeed, Immanuel- God is With Us. He experienced all that the human condition has to offer- the joy, the sadness, anger, the laughter, the pain..and did so while living out Gods standards to perfection...an achievement that has never again been duplicated. He was the perfect and holy Lamb of God, who took away the sins of the world and it was through His birth and ultimate sacrifice on the cross at Calvary that today we can confidently say all the enemys plans have been thwarted & shattered. Not one shall stand. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, dont let its true meaning get lost amid the gift exchanges and family reunions. Jesus was God with us then and He is God with us today. And when you have God on your side, absolutely nothing can stand against you. Merry Christmas to all from your friends at GodSpeaks!
