God gives us what we need, but Peter also makes it clear that God’s equipping leaves us with expectations as well. We do not lean back and hope God does his work in us. Rather, we pursue the virtues which will mold us into the people God needs us to be. As we pursue faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love, we develop the character which evidences our faith in God. Our mission is to proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God. We can not be effective in our mission if our lives betray that we follow the paths of the world. God has called us to be in the world because we cannot share Jesus without contact with other people, but we are also called to keep from being stained by the world.
