God has given inalienable rights to all humans, but they are protected best in the United States of America because of our Constitution and the men and women of our military who have fought and died in defense of freedom. While we should begin EVERY day acknowledging their sacrifice, Memorial Day presents the opportunity for us to meet our obligation and render honor to the fallen. I think of my own father who flew 85 combat missions over Europe in WWII as a bomber pilot, including a decisive strike on Utah Beach before Allied troops swarmed ashore on D-Day to free the continent from Hitlers iron grip. Visiting the graves of his squadron mates in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial was one of the most moving moments of my life, connecting me with the legacy of a generation that literally saved the world.
