God in a Box 2 Chronicles 6:18 I am continually amazed by the profound wisdom of Solomon as he addresses dangerous pitfalls that many of us blindly fall into. In this verse, Solomon is addressing the narrow-minded idea that God is a God that lives in a temple built by man: “But will God really live on earth among people? Why, even the highest heavens cannot contain you. How much less this Temple I have built!” 2 Chronicles 6:18 (NLT). During the past several centuries, the Israelites had become accustom to having God in a “box” (the Ark of the Covenant). It’s possible that by this time they had begun to think of God as a God Who only dwelt in the Ark; but Solomon makes it very clear that God is bigger than the Ark, bigger than the Temple, bigger than the earth—bigger than the heavens. The nations around Israel worshiped statues of gods in temples, and Solomon wanted to make it clear that God was bigger than anything man could make—regardless of how impressive the building might be. How often do we build our own ark for God, squeezing Him into our tiny, manmade boxes rather than allowing Him to be bigger than our paltry ideas? Too often we say, “God is like this” or “This is what God looks like,” when God could not possibly fit into any picture we could ever create with paint or words. So, let’s listen to the wisest man who ever lived when he says of his God, “Even the highest heavens cannot contain You.” ~Randy & Trena Reed
