Godzilla Lets get this straight. The animated movie Frozen came - TopicsExpress

Godzilla Lets get this straight. The animated movie Frozen came out and our area experienced a rare ice storm. Then, Russell Crowe played Noah on the big screen and we had a 150 year flood. Hmmm. Now, Hollywood is about to release a new version of Godzilla! How do we prepare for this one?!Of course, there is a difference between correlation and causation, but let’s play the game for a little bit. Assuming that there really was something of a cause and effect relationship between Hollywood’s big pictures and our climate, we would have to start preparations. When posting to my facebook page, friends suggestions included: running, investing in bananas, the purchase of some large weaponry, and some community building with the Japanese community. Running involves simple evacuation. The banana hope relies on King Kong’s intervention. The last idea requires confrontation and fighting the monster. I’m not so sure which option is best, but I’m really glad that the hope of our community doesn’t rest in any of these option! In real life, we often make connections between catastrophe and its causes.Superstitions would say not to walk under a ladder or to let a black cat cross your path. Football junkies might wear their favorite underwear for each game. Fisherman have to hold their mouths just right. Personally, I blame myself for Auburn’s loss to FSU during the last National Championship because I left the tv for a few minutes to put my children to bed. (We were ahead and the game seemed over when I left. When I returned we were behind! The only other time that happened was when we played LSU!) We can be so silly sometimes. We often find ourselves trying to find the reasons for our struggles: superstitions, Hollywood, politics, and global warming. In dealing with the weather, the culprit remains at large and we have no way of obtaining compliance from Mother Nature. If weather was really the only issue that affected us, we would be helpless. Instead, most of our problems have real causes with real solutions. It’s fun to play correlation games and even entertain certain conspiracy theories, but we usually contribute to our circumstances. Instead of blaming someone else for your problems, take a look at your own responsibility. In my own life, I have had to swallow the words of Proverbs 19:3, which says “People ruin their lives by their own stupidity, so why does God always get blamed?” My financial problems have been because I spent too much and saved too little. My weight problem has been because I exercised too little and ate too much. My relationship struggles have been because I was too selfish and independent. Sure, there have been times when I blamed someone God, the weather, or someone else, but it usually didn’t take long before I looked in the mirror. Take a look in the mirror this week. What are you about to wreck? Who are you driving away? Are you giving yourself enough grace? What can you do to change your own destiny? Until Godzilla rises from the deep, we should probably keep the bananas for ourselves. In the meantime, know that you have the power to make a difference in the world and your own life. Make wiser choices. Live simply and avoid the disaster. Love one. Love another. Jack
