Godzilla, gonna keep this simple since the movie wasnt that complex itself. Good stuff: Godzilla maintains his throne as King of the Monsters. The battle scenes are shot quite well, and its all rather awe inspiring to see this destruction go down. The effects were awesome. Gareth Edwards makes everything look so grand. Definitely a fan of the director after this. Stuff I didnt like: Godzilla does his thing, but he does it for what seems like no time on screen, or not nearly as much as Id like. That would be fine if the human characters had some real drama going on and I had someone to root for other than the monsters, but thats not the case. The best character in the film is on screen for about a third of it all, and the lead protagonist is just not exciting. I really didnt care about him. Aaron-Taylor Johnson is horribly miscast in my opinion. With the storyline he had, he just didnt sell it at all. He was wooden, didnt believe him; and I cared even less for his family which is never good when Im supposed to fear for peoples lives in a disaster movie. Conclusion: It was pretty decent but I cant go much further than that. I liked the overall tone, the direction, cinematography, and effects. Godzilla snatched back his throne and brought the action for the time he was on screen. Wish the people characters were half as interesting as the monsters and that the most developed character in the film was actually in the movie for a considerable time. I liked it enough, but really wanted to love it. Wasnt as simple as I said itd be oops.
