God’s faithful servants: Joni Eareckson Tada. “Tada was born in 1949 in Baltimore, Maryland, the youngest of four daughters. As a teenager, Tada enjoyed riding horses, hiking, tennis, and swimming. On July 30, 1967, she dove into Chesapeake Bay after misjudging the shallowness of the water. She suffered a fracture between the fourth and fifth cervical levels and became a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the shoulders down. During her two years of rehabilitation, according to her autobiography, she experienced anger, depression, suicidal thoughts, and religious doubts…” [source: Wikipedia]. Joni’s recovery from that immense low to serve her Lord so faithfully is well recorded and I would recommend reading her books and seeing videos on Youtube of her story. She is known as a mouth-painter, singer, writer, disability activist as well as being quadriplegic. Following an understandably negative reaction to her accident, she gradually drew on her faith and has lived a very positive, God-honouring life since. Her age is very close to mine but her life is a rebuke to me. Do I love the Lord as much as she does? “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46. youtube/watch?v=0cjxR4OR08o
