God’s word represents both his revelation in general and his commands and promises. How can a young man keep his way pure? How may believers keep their lives pure, resisting the immoral influences that characterize the ungodly environment in which we live? The second stanza of this psalm lists the following eight ways, one in each verse; 1) by making an irreversible decision to remain loyal to God’s word for the rest of our lives; 2) by seeking the Lord in prayer; 3) by committing God’s word to memory; 4) by looking to God for guidance; 5) by taking an open stand to God’s truth; 6) by rejoicing and delighting in what God says; 7) by considering the outcome of God’s ways as opposed to the world’s ways; and 8) by never becoming too busy to read and study God’s word. 119;23 rulers sit together and slander me. The psalmist testifies that he suffered much scorn, contempt and slander as he attempted to live a righteous life in accordance with God’s word; this opposition, however, did not deter him from following God’s way. Today those who are faithful to Christ and his word must also expect to be criticized and ridiculed; they may be called legalists or extremists by those who conform to the worldy ways of ungodly society (see Mt 5.10 Lk 6.22. Ps. 119.27). God’s word can only be understood fully with his help (vv.26-27, 29) thus we should continually pray God, through his Holy Spirit, to draw near to us, to increase our understanding and to teach us his truth Jn 14.17 1Jn 2.27.
