Goin way back Part 2. Lets move from South Fork toward Lewisville and Clemmons. Who remembers Sheltons Lake? How many jumped off that 20-foot high dive out in the middle? I did...and I was only five years old at the time. The old Lewisville junk yard at the bottom of the hill across from Meadowlark Drive? I used to love to go there and look at the mangled wrecks. For some reason, I was fascinated with car wrecks. I think it came from the movie Thunder Road. The infamous Porth House on Phillips Bridge Road where Robert Porth murdered his wife and dumped her body off a cliff on the Blue Ridge. 421 River Bridge where many a late-night drag race took place? I was there the night Ricky Tesh smoked Ralph Jones 69 Mach1 by 3 car lengths in a 340 Dodge Swinger...stock except for that 4:33 rear axle gear. The rickety, one-lane bridge on Shallowford Road? That thing bounced like a rubber ball if ya tried to cross it at more than about 15 mph. Styers Ferry grocery, where wed load up with provisions for the day when we skipped school at West? A time when there wasnt a West Forsyth High School? When there was only one traffic light in Clemmons? Barney Burger? The Big House out on Lasater Road before it became the NC Jewish Home? Farmington Drag Strip when it was a quarter mile...and then a fifth? Look what theyve done to our little towns. I missem.
