Going Wassailing in the new year? Wassailing is an ancient English musical tradition in which people went from door to door singing carols and were rewarded with hot mulled cider. It was originally associated with the blessing of orchards in the West Country and also in Hertfordshire, with its roots in the pre-Christian beliefs of Anglo-Saxon times. Wassailing was prohibited during the Reformation but was revived by the Victorians and is popularly associated with Christmas - although traditionally, Wassailing was a custom observed on Twelfth Night, the Feast of the Epiphany. bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04vdgq4
