Going through some files and I found three pages torn out of a yellow legal pad. It was my Business plan when I interviewed to be the Artistic Director of the Granbury Opera. One page was the shows I thought would work in Granbury, the next was the actors I thought I could bring to Granbury, and the third was a list of some of the wealthiest donors in Granbury. When I presented this to the Board, I was laughed out of the interview. They wanted a real business plan. I think I told them that if I knew anything about business, I wouldnt waste the knowledge on show business. It didnt get a laugh and I didnt get the job. As a footnote, the two business guys they hired reputedly ran up a quarter of a million dollars worth of debt in six months and sent the theater into bankruptcy. Its how the city ended up owning the building. When they were here, I went out to lunch with them and they asked me earnestly what shows would work in Granbury, what actors could we bring here and who were the wealthiest donors? I told them I didnt have the foggiest idea. Im going to mark these papers under the heading Ha Ha, and file them back.
