Going through the footage from the night of Aug 12-13 I am pretty convinced that both Mum and Dad visit 3 times, I do not think the young return at all after they depart at 8:40PM. The male (as I previously mentioned) could be demonstrating Nest-showing Display behavior. He gives an advertising call repeatedly, however no copulation occurs within the nest. The greeting and conversational twitters could convey recognition of mates and are associated with courtship activities; we see some billing happening, which is what we saw at the start of the season, as well as kicking. At the time I considered this behavior as pair bonding, which was mainly initiated by the female during the egg laying period. Alternatively the males call could be a copulation call which is often described as a repeated staccato squeal. It is really down to interpretation, I am really interested to see if they continue to return to the box. What are your thoughts?
