Going to crowbar this one in, even though its not necessarily related to Bovine TB... Well ignore the theory that removing badgers is more to do with planning than disease control... (as thats unsubstantiated) Well also ignore the fact that badgers are blamed for the decline in bees, birds, hedgehogs and anything else the pro-camp can come up with... (as we know there are far more influences and variables at work) The point of posting this article is that it demonstrates once again that the Government have a lack of understanding for how things work... Instead of observing that different types of brown and green field sites have different value in terms of the biodiversity they can support, they have produced a blinkered blanket approach which is damaging. In terms of M.bovis, we know that control of the disease needs to be undertaken on a farm by farm basis; why do some farms in HRA suffer from repeat breakdowns while neighbouring ones have never suffered? Current control, according to Defra, consists of controlling two species, cattle and badgers, but takes no account of environmental contamination, other hosts, animal nutrition, climate, geology/geography (e.g. iron rich soils), parasitism, ventilation and so on... (Nor do they seem aware of the risks involved in culling badgers, but thats another story...) Its another case of appearing to do something with little regard for the short-sightedness and possible detrimental effects of the policy... buglife.org.uk/news-%26-events/news/brownfield-or-greenfield-%E2%80%93-it%E2%80%99s-not-a-black-and-white-issue
