Going to get on my racing soapbox for a minute, prepared for an onslaught of criticism, but...though Im happy theres a King of the Wing race coming to Madera and Irwindale, its really a sad commentary on whats happened to super-modified racing. Although I appreciate most forms of circle-track racing, I do feel that sprint cars should race on dirt without wings, and super-modifieds should race on pavement with wings. And the irony is, the two classes of cars are not that much different, thus their occasional running in an open-comp. configuration (such as at Madera earlier this year). If a promoter can get 2 dozen+ sprint cars from across the country to come out for a California series, why not supers? And, again, these are not genuine (e.g., traditional) sprint cars...not like what used to run at Calistoga and Ascot, Corona, Chula Vista, Hanford, etc. More of a hybrid-type vehicle. Yet, theyll put together a show, whereas the super-mod. community will sit idly by and literally watch their type of racing go the way of the dinosaur, steam train, commercial aeroplane, and all-natural food. If this isnt a wake-up call for supers, then it might be a death knell. I dont have the answers and, sadly, neither does anyone else. Lastly, its not like I dont wish Davey Hamilton wearing his Promoters Hat all the success in the world, I just wish he was promoting super-modifieds. (NOTE to Irwindale and KCRP: I still havent visited your tracks this year. Cookie-cutter NASCAR-clone cars are of little interest to me. Supers on the other hand...)
