Going to see Errick Lewis’ gig at Secret Society last night gave me the same feeling that compelled me to move to the NYC area for Jazz back in 1999 (i.e. the high level of musicianship, coupled with the energy and size of such an appreciative audience for GOOD live music…as well as them not flinching at a $25 cover charge). So to any of the Jazz musicians in Portland who have never been to NYC, believe me when I say that the funk scene here in P-town is arguably the closest thing that you’ll find in this state in regards to understanding what the feeling of the Jazz scene in NYC was/is like, as it pertains to their collective degree of seriousness for musical progress, and their sense of camaraderie among one another within their desire to support one another and to generally see each other succeed. So needless to say, I’ll be investing WAY more time in 2015 in thoroughly integrating myself into this scene as they have exactly what I’ve been missing the most of since leaving NYC.
