Gold rush ghost town stream gets a fish-friendly makeover...Not many fish passage improvement projects take place in winter, especially in Alaska. However, an unusually mild winter allowed a Skagway construction company to replace a pair of damaged, no-so-fish-friendly culverts on a tributary of West Creek in Dyea last weekend with a 6+ foot natural bottom crossing. Dyea is the starting point of the Chilkoot Trail, the famous route gold seekers took over Chilkoot Pass in 1898 to reach the headwaters of the Yukon River and eventually the Klondike gold fields by boat. Now coho salmon and Dolly Varden char will have an easier time accessing upstream habitats. The project was made possible by a partnership between our Juneau Field Office and the Alaska Department of Transportation.
