Goldie was the brainchild of Ken Gregory (noted Healey PR guru) - TopicsExpress

Goldie was the brainchild of Ken Gregory (noted Healey PR guru) who wanted an attention-getter for the 1958 London Motor Show at Earl’s Court that would draw crowds to the Austin-Healey stand. The Daily Express paid for the car and would later award it as Grand Prize in a reader’s contest. The BN6 was essentially stock in mechanical specification but almost every metal surface was plated in 24K gold including the fasteners, wheels, brakes, bright work and interior trim. The cockpit was trimmed in champagne hides from Connolly and matching Diadem mink trim. Ivory replaced most of the plastic and Bakelite pieces including the steering wheel. Valued at four times the cost of a stock 100-6, Goldie was almost immediately sold by the contest winner and passed through several hands before undergoing a total restoration by a marque specialist. The car was offered for sale on eBay almost a year ago for $1,000,000 and was a no sale failing to attract a single bid. What will seven figures get you in the Healey world? A privateer 100S in fair to good condition. The mid six-figures would get you a Warwick 100 or a factory 3000 or 100M race car. The low six-figures will get you the nicest 3000 or 100M existing anywhere in the world and most privateer racecars with period history. A million dollars for a 100-6 show car? Even one as well known as Goldie? Nope, not on your life, not a chance. Of the Healey show cars, only the original Warwick 100 that was shown at Earl’s Court in 1952 might exceed a million dollars in value. What the current seller is asking is for a price that is an order of magnitude above that could be expected of a stock 100-6 in No. 1 condition. The real value? The original price seems fair enough – four times stock (or in this case, four times a concours condition 100-6) which would be $300,000. The car is still for sale and we have the details if you’re interested. Drop us a PM (NFI).
