Golfbidder Tour Wrap The final round of the Honda Classic was supposed to be the Rory McIlroy show. None of the big guns were even on the same page. Tiger Woods had even walked off the course nursing a sore back and was most likely back home in time to watch the Rory show on TV. Of course things rarely pan out as you expect and especially so when PGA National and its Bear Trap are involved. The would be procession soon turned into a pile up for McIlroy as another stuttering final round began to take shape. This time there was no Caroline to confer with inside the ropes. A most un-Rory-like semi-duffed fairway bunker shot on 16 was the pick of his poor shots and lead to double bogey and he followed it with another bogey from the sand on the tricky 17th to fall one shot behind the leaders. Then came the kind of moment only Champions can conjure, a 245 yard 3-wood miracle shot on the last that left an eagle putt to win. Everything about that shot was epic, only McIlroy could have produced it. It was almost inconceivable that he then stood over a putt to win the Honda Classic given the terrible day he had and maybe it was only just that it slipped by to set up the playoff eventually won by Russell Henley. “You know, even if I had won, it would have felt a little bit undeserved,” Rors candidly told reporters after. Cue even more talk of Rory “being close” but not yet the finished article. The countdown to Augusta just took another little twist! Of course the American media went to town on Tiger’s walk off. The danger with being muscle bound is that when back spasms come, they’re going to be debilitating in the short term. Woods, famous for playing through injury, managed 13 holes in five over par before finally summoning over playing partner Luke Guthrie to call it a day. Of course with Woods out of contention in any case, the next cause of worry was that he might miss the WGC Cadillac in Doral this week. Regarding Doral, too early to tell, he said. Ill get treatment every day to try and calm it down. Dont know yet. Well see how I am, waiting till Thursday and see how it feels. They say every cloud has a silver lining and Woods walk off actually allowed the TV producers to end the frankly absurd coverage of his every waking moment and return to coverage what was one of the most dramatic conclusions to the event in recent memory. Ross Fisher got back to winning ways for the first time since the 2010 Irish Open at the low key Tshwane Open in the final tournament of the European Tour’s South African swing. Ross started the final round with a five shot lead and though one or two got close along the way a super eagle putt on the par-five 15th sealed the deal for the Englishman who is back up to 52 in the world rankings and 16th on the Ryder Cup standings. How great was it to see that familiar Fisher wave again! Shot of the week goes to Paula Creamer who won the HSBC Womens Champions in Singapore with a ‘miracle’ putt for eagle on the second playoff hole. It was measured at 75 feet. Its one of those putts where if you just get it in the right spot, its going to fall down, she said. But I could stand there all day long and putt that and I dont think get it within six, seven feet.
