Gomathy is the caretaker at Windsor Mansions, one of the oldest apartment complexes at Kuravankonam in Thiruvanthapuram. Her job is to keep all the common areas neat and tidy. She also collects waste from all the houses for a private company. Every resident is supposed to segregate the waste into 1. Biodegradable 2. Plastics 3. Glasses and metals and 4. Paper and paper products. Indians being Indians and Malayalees being Malayalees, they put all the waste together in a plastic bag and keep it outside their house for her to pick up every day. Gomathy never complains. She carefully segregates all the waste. Kitchen waste is dumped into a large container in which some chemical is poured. Within a few days the waste becomes manure and it is taken to Bangalore where it is processed further and sold. Glass and plastic waste is sent to Chennai. Recently, Windsor Mansions was selected as the best apartment complex in terms of waste disposal in the state capital Gomathy is the person who brought laurels to the residents. A few months back, she was felicitated at a meeting of the residents welfare association. Photo shows well-known film producer Shyama Prasad, son of BJP leader Shri O. Rajagopal and a resident of Windsor Mansions, honouring Gomathy at the function. Everyone who spoke on the occasion praised Gomathy for her sense of duty. Gomathy is not just a caretaker for the residents. She is invited to all family functions. Though she is always smiling, few know that her life has been tragic. She lost her husband at a young age. Her second marriage also ended in a tragedy when her husband died. She has one son who is very close to her. He did B.Com and he recently got a job in a private firm. For those who do not know how to wear sari, she is just a call away as she is considered an expert in draping sari. Gomathy may be poor but she is rich in the goodwill she enjoys from all those who come across her, including this writer.
