Gone Forever: Five or Six Friends, and Counting... I just learned through one of my oldest Facebook friends, the Australian rascal Cj Merrett Mbe, that another of my oldest Facebook friends, McKinley Mitchell, killed himself within the past twenty-four hours. He liked one of my posts and I looked at his timeline just yesterday. He was a trucker, and I enjoyed his travel photo logs across America. He had a young daughter. Coincidentally, the friend through whom I learned of this is the same through whom I learned of another friend, David Barges, death by heart attack a couple years ago (hed gone to see The Pit and the Pendulum one evening, returned home in a taxi without seeing the film, banged on the door, answered by his mother, collapsed, and died). Additionally, one of my high school classmates, John Taylor Skilling, with whom I once shared a free period and remained in sporadic online contact after graduation, died of an overdose three years ago, Jonatas Müller, a popular transhumanist philosopher, killed himself due to the pain of his fibromyalgia, Ezekiel Elmes, someone I never interacted with (besides him once saying something I posted was COOL!) killed himself due to depression (I discovered this over a year later), and Kim Suozzi, whom I met at the Alcor Life Extension Foundations fortieth anniversary conference, entered cryostasis early last year after her deanimation from glioblastoma multiforme, for a total thus far of five information-theoretically dead and one clinically dead Facebook connections. The internet can lull us into thinking everyone will always be here - but they wont.
