Gone are those days when a filmmaker had to be looked at as a special species. Throw a couple of stones around and for sure one of them will hit a filmmaker OR a wanna-be filmmaker. Its no more a mystery. If someone has something to tell, they dont just share it amongst their friends or whisper it during a pillow talk, they are all thinking of taking it a step forward, they are thinking – Lets make a movie about this. Why was this not a reality a few years ago? Why did the filmmakers enjoy that special treatment back then, and why are they not so unique anymore? What has changed? Since the dawn of time and forever, there is one thing that will NOT change. It is the act of telling a story. You agree with me right? These stories have always been there, what changed is how they were shared with the community. As filmmakers, we are telling stories and because it is such a complex art form with thousands of people involved in making a story come alive on the screen, it didnt become a format chosen by everyone, so it remained special and reserved for few special people. But now, its all changed. My grand mother is juggling with a high end camera on her smart phone, she has no sense of framing, but she is capturing a story, and she is going to show it to a couple of her friends and they are going to react to it, they are going to be drawn by that “short film”, they will probably bluetooth transfer it on their smart phones and then show it to their grand kids back in their homes. Welcome to the new age distribution system of films. Our grand mothers are doing it... but are we?
