Good Afternoon Everyone! This is mama and recently I posted a video of Bruiser playing in the snow. In that video there was a shot of our dog Rufus who is on a chain and someone inquired if he had shelter. So I want to clear this up. Rufus is a 7 yr old neutered husky/irish setter mix who has cleared a 6 ft fence, gotten through an underground fence system and broke off his chain high tailing it through the woods chasing everything he could find. He was gone for 6 days and we spent each of those 6 days walking heavy wooded areas, calling people, placing an ad in the local paper, etc. We covered about 400 acres of land and trust me when I say it was very tiring but worth it for on the 6th day he returned home safe..it was hunting season and he easily could have been shot. It is not my wish to have him on a chain but it is the only way we can keep him safe. Rufus spends his day outdoors, weather permitting and the rest of the time he is indoors...now as for shelter...yes he has shelter and its not a dog house for Rufus has a fear of closed in areas...I have purchased a calf hutch for him..he would not use it..I purchased a very large dog house..he would not use it. You see Rufus must be able to survey his land..he is a very good watch dog..so what we did is we took our deck area (underneath..plenty of room and no obstacles) and made it his shelter..he has plenty of bedding which is changed wkly along with a very large dog bed is also there and he uses it as he sees fit...my husband made a very special box 36x36 that sits in his turf...it has another large dog pillow on top of 4 of bedding, which is also changed each time it snows or rains, thus keeping him dry and OFF the cold ground. My animals are my babies and I would never put them in harms way nor would I not provide proper shelter for them. Each one is spoiled more then I can tell you...my husband and I have not slept in the same room for the last yr for we place our babies at the top of our priority list..so I hope I have put at ease anyones thinking that our babies are mistreated or not properly cared for. Sorry if this was long but I dont want anyone coming to BRUISERS page and being judgemental. It is a place where people can come and see what Bruiser is up to as well as his furry siblings and interact with him.
