Good Afternoon, On November 24, 2014, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Donald J. Hying as the fourth bishop of Gary and simultaneously accepted the resignation of Bishop Dale J. Melczek as Garys third bishop. Bishop Melczek reached the age limit as specified by Church law in 2013. The sixth of seven boys born to Albert and Catherine Hying, Bishop Hying, a native of West Allis, Wisconsin, was ordained to the priesthood for the archdiocese of Milwaukee in 1989, where he served in numerous parishes, as well as La Sagrada Familia, the archdioceses parish in the Dominican Republic. Additionally, he served as dean of formation at Saint Francis de Sales Seminary where he was later appointed rector, serving there until Pope Benedict XVI named him auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee in 2011. Fluent in Spanish, Bishop Hyings missionary experience will bring a strong sense of understanding and compassion to many of the faithful in the Diocese of Gary. We ask you to join us in keeping Bishop Hying, as well as Bishop Melczek, in our prayers during this time of transition. A Mass of installation will be celebrated at Holy Angels Cathedral on January 6. (There will be more information on Bishop Donald J. Hying and his background in the November 30 edition of the Northwest Indiana Catholic.) Let us please keep Bishop Melczek and Bishop Hying in our prayers. Have a good evening, Anita Anita L.
