Good Afternoon, The Town of Chesterton in response to numerous complaints about the mosquitoes would like the residents to know that we sympathize with them over this infestation as we suffer from them as well. Many communities used to spray but few do now as the chemical used in former sprays (usually DDT) was effective but toxic to humans and eventually banned. Newer sprays were developed that were environmentally friendly but ineffective for the most part against the mosquitoes. The applications are extremely expensive and only last about 24 hours in calm conditions before the mosquitoes return. If breezy, even less. It would be like using a small bucket of water on a large fire. It is even less effective in areas like Chesterton where we have so much standing or slow moving water from all the rain. We also have residents with lung/breathing disorders who are adversely effected by any chemical spraying. The only advice we can offer is to ensure you have a good insect repellent for working around the house or for school children waiting for the bus or walking to school. These are available at the local grocery, hardware and/or drug stores. Hats and long sleeve light weight shirts help as well.
